This research involved a long-term participatory study embedded in the Solidary Mobile Housing (SMH) project, a Living Lab aimed at developing, testing, and refining a model and prototype for the co-creation of solidary living in mobile homes on un(der)used urban spaces in the Brussels-Capital Region. The aim of this PhD was to extend the knowledge contributions of the practice-oriented SMH project with a deeper study on how the co-creation of temporary housing on urban waiting spaces, for and with homeless people and civil society organisations, can contribute to socio-spatial resilience. Moreover, the PhD also aimed to understand the consequences of this for urbanism and architectural design. In order to address these aims and questions, in this PhD, we have interwoven Participatory Action Research in the SMH Living Lab with a theoretical and case study review​ and a Critical Reflection on the SMH methods, experiences, and outcomes.In this PhD, temporary use of waiting spaces for housing is put forward as a small step towards, in the short-term, rapidly providing more affordable housing for the most vulnerable citizens. Moreover, this PhD also identifies a long-term perspective, focusing on adopting a more ‘transitional’ approach to the city, and leading to the transformation of the Brussels housing system to include more solidary and inclusive modes of housing production.The outcomes of this study further include solid policy recommendations for operationalising transitional use of waiting spaces for housing. In conclusion, the PhD culminated in the formulation of a future perspective for increasing socio-spatial resilience through the solidary appropriation of urban waiting spaces and Networked Critical Spatial Practices, which we called ‘the Futuring Stack’.

From the initial background in correlation with the research it was obvious that massive developments in tension areas do not deliver appropriate outcome. More so, it was elaborated the gap between the population and development plans. Therefore, tackling the construction sites as direct remotes that would enable influence over the future developments, appeared as initial hypothesis. Additionally, the research indicated through additional reasons that encouraged this hypothesis. From the considered analysis it was obvious that construction sites areas. In this manner, testing this kind of technique for handling the construction sites may improve their conduction and social interaction. In this point of view, construction can be turned into source of advantages and create spaces socially and economically adoptable by the contexts. However, this research promotes trend that go along with the importance of the public domain. Major private properties should step of land to the public as act of a social investment, which will inspire spatial quality and economical value. Nevertheless, the research exploration and the promoted specific design process revealed few pragmatic problems and economical issues that may evolve after acquiring a lot and launching a project: - Problem with finding appropriate program - Risk of not having popular building - Loss of finances while the construction site is being under construction or in a waiting phase - The site is losing its value and is becoming neglected by the locals - Surrounding commercial activities and businesses may leave the site and influence the real estate prize - Obstructions to the area and potential of finesPage 108 The promoted construction and design technique deals with these problems. - The program can be generated by the local needs - The building will be accepted by the local population - Generation of means while the construction process lasts - The site is becoming attractive for new users and variety target groups - The site gives pleasant impression in the visitors memory - Surrounding business can enhance their profit and invest in the area - Flow of the mobile and pedestrian traffic - Construction of vertical communication in the early stages, regardless of the major constructions which can enable actability to different floors disregarding the finishing process of the whole building. - Easy management with the installations and ventilation. All of these advantages can contribute for the good of different parties: investors, authorities and locals. These type of development may be dominantly important to arise in vulnerable areas and societies with multi-diverse contexts. Areas where people do not have great authority and capital power as a certain social class the participation remains the only tool that can bring them influence and importance. Such areas in Brussels, are also known as “the poor croissant around Brussels”: Forrest, Saint Gilles, Anderlecht, Molenbeek, Saint Josse, Schaerbeek. These municipalities are in constant tension and under certain developments. Engaging the local citizens from these municipalities may result with achieving better communication and interaction between citizens, authorities and development plans on different levels.
